World Bellydance Day 2011 in Trinidad and Tobago was a quiet success this year. Enabled by our friends at Provocative Fitness Studio, we were able to host a free public workshop. We opened with a lovely address by JC Blandin of Provocative Fitness Studio who shared her views on the importance of learning about the dance while learning how to dance and how that knowledge enriched her experience having previously attended a workshop with Ayperi Hanem Oriental Dance.
Attendees received a presentation on the history and styles of bellydance courtesy Ayperi Hanem Oriental Dance and then were party to a fun demonstration of props by our specially invited guest Nneka Femi Halima. Finally, the wonderful ladies who participated were able to do some very basic dancing in a routine that was more catered to fun than to technique.
It is really important though to recognise the support of the folks at Provocative Fitness Studio without whom this event would not have taken place. Not only did they sponsor the studio time, the technical support and the public relations, but we also had and continue to have their unrelenting support in educating Trinidad and Tobago about Middle Eastern dance culture and the art of raqs sharqi.
